Jaime Ferrando

In memoriam, Jaime Ferrando

Known to all as “Jimmy”, Jaime grew up in Peru with 12 siblings and a love of goalkeeping. He studied medicine in Valencia and worked as a Consultant IR at the original East Birmingham Hospital which then became Heartlands and now part of University Hospital Birmingham) Hospital from 1984 to 2007.

Jimmy was a great enthusiast for gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary radiology including vascular and non-vascular interventional radiology. Throughout his career Jimmy was a pioneer introducing many new techniques to the hospital. His passion was biliary intervention, but he was also one of the first consultants to introduce pulmonary thrombectomy to the Midlands. He loved teaching registrars and had a talent for training registrars in intervention typically letting first year’s scrub and perform the intervention under his guidance. He firmly believed that IR training was an apprenticeship and practical exposure was essential. All who passed through Heartlands for their IR training left with practical training, confidence, and many pearls of wisdom.

Jimmy and Anne retired to Melrose. Jimmy died in June aged 81 following a short illness, and leaves Anne, a retired Paediatrician, Luis, a Consultant Radiologist at The Borders Hospital, and James, a particle physicist.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
