An Interventional Radiology Trainee’s Perspective on the ASM 2023
Created - 30.11.2023
BSIR’s highly anticipated annual ASM was held in the ICC Wales venue this year. Over the course of the three days there were a wide range of inspirational talks on topics including embolisation, peripheral artery disease, venous and aortic intervention.
Additionally Prof. McCafferty, offered a thought provoking insight into the availability of paediatric IR around the country in the Graham Plant lecture. Throughout all 3 days of the conference workshops ran in tandem with talks. These spanned IR sub specialities including vascular malformations, interventional oncology and paediatric IR. They offered a unique opportunity to meet consultants and trainees interested in particular sub specialities as well as the chance to review interesting and difficult cases. Some provided an opportunity to get hands on, for example exploring paediatric vascular access devices and the opportunity to practice vascular punctures on a model. The second day ended with Dr Laasch who delivered a highly emotive and personal talk discussing burn out and mental health, resulting in a highly deserved standing ovation. The 2023 Gala dinner followed which was a unique opportunity to meet IRs from around the country in a less formal setting, as well as the chance to witness the range of dancing capabilities in the IR community. Friday saw the start of the BSIRT foundation day. This featured a programme showcasing the variety in IR, talks ranged from neuro and reproductive IR to vascular, paediatric IR and interventional oncology. Trainees were treated to some fantastic cases delivered by expert speakers from throughout the country. The afternoon focused on the professional journey of an IR, including advice on applying to radiology, IR training, research and a personal reflection on fellowship. I would highly recommend the foundation day to anyone interested in pursuing a career in IR, no matter how early in their medical training. It offered a casual and informative opportunity to explore the diverse nature of a career in IR along with the chance to ask questions. The conference wouldn’t have been able to go ahead without the help of its industry partners. The stalls set up in the conference exhibited new and exciting kit available in IR in an interactive setting, along with all important coffee!
