BSIR ASM 2022: IR trainee view
Created - 22.12.2022
The BSIR trainee committee has gone from strength to strength every year and I can truly say this has been one of the best BSIR meetings for trainees yet!
We were able to welcome essay scholars, junior doctors and medical students to the IR juniors lounge; a space where they were able to network and socialise with other juniors and trainees. We were also able to showcase the work the BSIR trainee committee and IR juniors team have been undertaking by displaying recordings of educational IR talks, career seminars and journal clubs done over the past year. The focus for trainees is the BSIR “Foundations Day”, a series of talks, lectures and workshops including inspiring case studies presented by consultants and trainees. The day not only helped demonstrate how wide ranging IR is but also provided tips and advice on how to enter speciality, subspeciality and fellowship training. Whilst the BSIR annual meeting always has inspiring sessions for medical students and foundation doctors interested in IR and cutting edge scientific sessions for consultants, in recent years, there has been a relative lack of educational content focused on junior registrars. In keeping with the changes introduced in the new curriculum, the “Diagnosis to Discharge” was introduced. From diabetic foot pathology to major trauma, the series focused on a comprehensive clinical and imaging approach to disease diagnosis and decision making for IR management. This was a welcome (and hopefully permanent!) addition to the BSIR meeting! Much work went into the “IR Museum” behind the scenes and was a massive success during the conference. We are able to showcase the different equipment used by IR’s and juniors were guided by faculty and members from industry as they were introduced to the vast variety of technology available at the IR’s disposal. Overall, the feedback from delegates was extremely positive and we are looking forward to continuing to support IR trainees in the future. This was another successful BSIR event inspiring the next generation of interventional radiologists!
