Paediatric IR UK 2022 meeting - Trainee perspective

Created - 01.07.2022

As a new radiology trainee on the search for sub-specialty inspiration, I choose to revisit Manchester for the BSIR Paediatric IR UK conference. My last visit was as a final year medical student where I had accidently stumbled into the niche world of Paediatric IR. The meeting may have grown in size but was as welcoming, friendly and accessible as I remember.

I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces as well as meeting new ones with practitioners and other trainees visiting from all over. It was exciting to hear the multitude of ways IR was practiced in paediatrics as well as the variety of ways people trained in this field.

Topics for discussion included hearing about how we can improve communication with children and families, to learning about how interior design can setup a department for success! A highlight for me was hearing from a patient and their family the impact IR care had on their life.

Overall, I left feeling refreshed and energised, with plenty to mull over. I would recommend to any trainees looking for career inspiration to attend, at the very least they will be greeted with warmth and positivity (and amazing flapjacks)!
